Unaccompanied minors are child migrants under the age of 18 who have made the perilous journey without a parent or guardian, or who have been separated from their families at the border.
The number of unaccompanied minors in Claire’s school has been growing rapidly in recent years. At any given time, Claire’s organization shelters up to 200 unaccompanied children in group residential facilities and transitional foster boarding homes. These children are typically in the program for 45-60 days during which they are provided with healthcare, trauma-informed education and counseling services.
Although all children live with some risk of experiencing violence and other threats, some children are at higher risk than others and are in special need of protection and advocacy.
Migrant children have been uprooted from their community and loved ones and the inherent loss and confusion of this experience can cause childhood trauma or Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD).
Experiencing difficult or disturbing events can significantly impact the social and emotional wellbeing of a child. Exposure to violence or disaster and loss of, or separation from, family members and friends can all have immediate, as well as long term consequences for children, families and communities.
Our goal at Music for Migrants is to strengthen learners’ social wellbeing through activities that build relationships with teachers, parents, and peers and reate a sense of belonging to a community. For kids who have lost loved ones or been separated from family members at the border, building a sense of community is essential to their felt safety.
